An Assembled Pair of Federal Carved Mahogany Armchairs

New York, New York, Circa 1800


with square backs, the crestrails with tablet carved with lunette and fan-carved spandrels, over scrolled and outswept arms, the terminals carved with rosettes, over-upholstered seats, the backrests with reeded colonnettes, on tapered and reeded legs, the front legs with brass sabots.

Height 35 x width 23 1/4 x depth 20 inches.

Condition
retaining nice dry surface; the backrests vary slightly- one chair with four posts and the other with three; the chair with three posts: showing evidence that it originally had four- the posts were reconfigured, with plugged holes along lower back rail and with mends evident to crestrail, some patches along back of fans to backrest- including a repaired break to crest; arms possibly reinforced to seat frames, with some minor loss around joins; age cracks to an armrest to both chairs; some age cracks and minor occasional wear / loss along feet; chair with four posts: mended repair with patch along right-facing back leg where it meets seat frame, and arms reinforced to stiles; the sabots with some general oxidation; upholstery with some occasional staining and signs of wear; cambric has not been removed for inspection; some age cracks to fans along backrest
